Core part

A portion of a part for which you recover a portion of the cost when you return the used portion to the vendor. Vendors repair, rebuild, remanufacture, or refill such parts for resale. Parts that are frequently considered core parts include engines, alternators, starters, and brake shoes.

The typical scenario for the life of a core part begins when the part is ordered from a vendor. The core part arrives at an inventory location, where it is eventually distributed to a shop. The shop installs the core part on an equipment unit. When the part wears out or is damaged, the shop replaces it and returns the old core part to the parts department. The parts department can sell the used part back to the vendor.
