Serialized Parts Management |
Serialized parts management tracks the life cycle of parts movement where the value and function are important over time. Typically, the types of parts to serialize are those that are rebuildable, such as starters, alternators, transmissions, or wheel sets.
Tip: For a part to be serialized, it must have a part classification with a check in the Serialized checkbox on the Data > Parts Items > Setup > Part Classifications screen.
The most frequent use of serialized parts is when the part is:
Rebuildable (very likely)
Warrantable (likely)
Positional (possibly)
Some fleets may remove a part, evaluate the core for internal or external rebuilding, and then track its movement.
Fleets with many standard vehicles may replace and remove parts or engine assemblies where individual parts are tracked for defect management to better evaluate part life performance within or outside of warranty. For example, a new alternator may be installed on an engine scheduled for rebuilding so that the alternator can be removed and used on another engine assembly or another equipment unit to avoid the cost of restocking additional parts.
Transit fleets may require positional information to track the physical location of a serialized part if that part has multiple positions on an equipment unit.
Two screens associated with serialized parts management are:
Data -> Parts Items -> Serialized Parts
Data -> Parts Items -> Serial Number Renumbering
